Doris Reid Obituary

Mrs. Doris Holt Reid, daughter of the late Bennie Holt, Sr. and Ellen Holt, was born January 22,1958, in Eatonton, GA.  She was a devoted and caring wife, mother, daughter, sister, family member, teacher, and friend. Mrs. Doris Reid peacefully departed from the earth’s classroom to embrace eternal life on September 1, 2023.

Mrs. Doris Reid was born, raised, and resided in Eatonton, GA, for the entirety of her life.  She was a lifelong member of Greater Bell Chapel Church and attended Zion Covenant Fellowship Church alongside her husband, Deacon Robert Reid, Sr. She advanced through the Putnam County School System and graduated with the class of 1976. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Albany State University in 1982.  Immediately following graduation, she was employed by Baldwin County School Board of Education. The following year, she was employed by the Putnam County School District to teach middle grades math. She remained a Putnam County Middle School math teacher until she retired in 2013.

On December 24, 1988, she was united in holy matrimony with Robert Reid, Sr.  Mr. and Mrs. Reid built a life together for over 34 years until Mrs. Reid’s departure.  Mr. and Mrs. Reid’s family was completed on June 29, 1992 when they were blessed with their twins, Robert, Jr. and Robin. The twins were Mrs. Reid’s proudest achievement, and they accommodated her with constant love and joy.  She was ecstatic and delighted to be their mother.  Mrs. Reid was also an involved and proactive aunt to her nieces and nephews, especially her niece Shonta Holt Mitchell throughout her niece’s adolescent years.

Mrs. Reid adored her children and husband and was an amazing mother and wife respectively. who worked endlessly to nurture and support her family’s endeavors. She treasured and cherished her family profoundly, and she passed peacefully with them lovingly by her side.

Mrs. Reid was undoubtedly one of the most boisterous and entertaining educators at Putnam County Middle School.  Many of her students still recall her animated antics, quick rebuttals, and old- school teaching techniques.  Mrs. Reid was a spirited educator throughout her teaching tenure and was able to enjoy her career alongside her sister and best friend, Mrs. Joyce Hill. With high heels, ever-changing hairstyles, and red lipstick, this sisterly duo graced the halls of Putnam County Middle School educating thousands of Eatonton’s youth until they retired in the 2012-2013 school year. This dynamic duo will forever be remembered by generations of Putnam County alumni.

Doris was known by many monikers in her time, including “Dorothy Jean” and Mrs. Reid by most, but the one most fitting in the familial sense was a name bestowed upon her by her youngest brother, Alfonso Holt, “Miss Boss.”  Although the youngest daughter, Mrs. Reid was the self-proclaimed boss of the family.  Growing up tussling with her five brothers and attempting to domineer her older sisters, Mrs. Reid had an imperious spirit that would live on in many of the younger members of her family.

She had a nurturing energy and delighted in making her home the gathering place for family and friends.  Her home was a safe haven for Robin and Robert’s friends and the event space for family gatherings and celebrations.  As long as her health permitted, Mrs. Reid was the family cook, preparing amazing spreads for all the major holidays. Mrs. Reid was an avid shopper and traveler.  She and Ms. Hill spent their weekends scouring malls and outlets throughout Georgia. She and Mr. Reid spent their summers hopping on cruise ships and planning family vacations. She loved to get up and go and did so as long as she could.  Mrs. Reid relished being amongst family and friends and being able to serve the ones she loved.

In addition to her father, Bennie Holt, Sr., Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by her sister, Hellon Holt Jackson. Mrs. Reid’s spirited soul will live on in her devoted husband, Robert Reid, Sr.; loving children, Robin Reid and Robert Reid, Jr.; sister and best friend Joyce Hill (Willie); mother, Ellen Holt; brothers Randy Holt, Bennie Holt, Jr., Norris Holt, Rayford Holt, and Alfonso Holt; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.  Mrs. Reid spent a lifetime cultivating her family and educating the youth of her community.  Her unconditional love for family, quick-witted comebacks, family recipes, and love for fashion will live forever in her loved ones.
